Churchil to Bomber Command. Great Job on destroying the old Tiolet paper
factories Chaps!!! Germany (again) SBR'd for 1 IPC***

SS ~ I can see destroying the T.P. factory but then U should have let them eat the kraut.

EK ~ I'm happy to announce that Geekboy and Tusk have tied for first place in the 1st Annual Havoc 'Hoo kneedz a Dikshunary the Mowst?' contest...

Game 7438, MacTabar vs. Abramov

Your teammate (Geekboy) told me he sacrificed three chickens, a goat and a
virgin maiden to the dice gods. Personnally, I'd keep the virgin for myself though.

SS ~ hehehehehehehe and do just what?

Ian Chapman wrote:
Tickling the throat of a Lion is dangerous business.

SS ~ So how about the goat , chickens and virgin?

Game 7447, GedeOne vs. micwil

Micwil was overheard saying:

That's enough.!! That's enough.!!!!
I have had enough of these rolls. You win.!!!!!

SS ~ If he complains about the roller then it must be fair...

Game 7625, whermachter vs. ozymandius@rumple.dumpkins

"where oh where did my ally go?"

SS ~ A new song by the Rumple Dumpkins band heard on the A&A channel after the destruction of Russia.

Game 7621, Sohoa vs. slerch

I should have such luck all of the time and I would be the greatest player of all time. The songs that would be written about me would be sung and translated on all of the A&A computers in the land .

SS ~ Now, now Slerch. Snake eyes does not give one cause to dream.

Game 7605, slerch vs. polaris

I quit. The dice gave you this one from the very beginning. Crow all you want, but right now I hate this game. -Ian

Then, after 6 rounds of jammed fighter guns in the next battle...

FTR lands Kaz and has his eyes checked. Entire crew of FTR assembly line workers shot for incompetence.

EK ~ Why's everyone always blame the assembly workers? The pilot only gets an eye exam, but the poor, overworked, underpaid assembly line guys...

Who's Who in IAAPA
The Havoc Profile

This month Havoc introduces a new feature, thanks to RedDwarf's great idea and suggestion. If you have a player whom you'd like to see in a future Havoc profile, please send your nomination to havoc@axisandallies.net Include any suggestions for questions you'd like answered by future Profile subjects. The player who receives the most nominations will be invited to share his deepest thoughts and most personal experiences with the readers of Havoc....or else.

To start things off I asked the five highest ranking players in IAAPA to submit to interrogation. Four of them consented, with only minor arm-twisting, for the premiere of The Havoc Profile. In alphabetical order:

Hold on, hold on! One more thing before we get into these profiles. I just want all of you Statistics-obsessed wackos to know that I put a lot of work into figuring out the stats for each of these players. I dug through all of their available logs and made every possible effort to assure the accuracy of these stats; and I found more than a few conflicts between the gamelogs and the web site's data. In closing, if there's some other stat which you'd like to see included in future profiles, you're welcome to make a suggestion, but please don't hold your breath. :)

AARommel

A highly regarded and feared opponent, AARommel has been playing A&A sporadically since 1988. A 'young grandpa' (with associated memory difficulties) from Southern California, he's not quite sure when he joined IAAPA, but it was a few years ago. He's also somewhat hazy about his tournament accomplishments in IAAPA, but his success in AAMC tournaments is unsurpassed. He recently advanced to the Final round of the 1999 Masters where he lost the championship to Brutus.

Q: Who was/is your most difficult opponent?
A: Mr. Dice. I've had many good opponents, but I need several games to really assess a good player. My relatively few games against various players doesn't leave me with a good feel for who is the best. I haven't seen anyone yet that I felt I couldn't do better than 50% against.

Q: What's your favorite type of game?
A: I like a good game, with the other guy coming in a close 2nd, Allied or Axis. I like Japan the best, expanding to twice your size is nice. But, then again, having Russia push Japan into the sea is also sweet.

Q: What is your favorite strategy?
A: Since I usually play the Allies I have to react to the bid and Axis expansion, so the strategies vary. Generally I like Admiral DÖnitz. (http://uboat.net/men/doenitz.htm) He sent wolf packs after targets of opportunity. Cause the most damage wherever the opportunity arises.

Q: What changes would you like to see in IAAPA?
A: Get rid of the log requirement and have one set of rankings based only on points. Also, the club shouldn't require so much personal info. When abuse or neglect of safeguards happen, assurances of privacy will be worthless.

Q: Do you have any hints or suggestions for new players/members?
A: Buy infantry. You have to hold territory before you can start thinking about offensive pieces.

Q: Anything you'd like to add?
A: Thanks for the time and work from all the club officers.

Brutus

AKA The Butcher, Brutus joined IAAPA in 1997 and proceeded to earn his nickname as he slashed his way through the competition to the top of the IAAPA heap. Discovering the excitement and challenge of A&A in 1995, he threw himself into the game, finally managing to complete his 6th full game 2 years later. It apparently had taken him some time to adapt from the 1st Edition to 2d Edition rules between games 3 and 4. A mere lad of 26 (tho he claims that it changes every year) from Montreal, somewhere up in the Great White North, Brutus is the 1999 Masters Champion and currently holds the record for highest IAAPA rating, which peaked at 1484. Very active in IAAPA government, he performs or has performed duties as the Chancellor of Law, a Senator, and on IAAPA's Supreme Court.

Q: Who was/is your most difficult opponent?
A: Rewstr and AARommel.

Q: Who's your pick for IAAPA's top player other than yourself, and why?
A: Rewstr and AARommel because, besides a few minor differences in preferences or style, they play very much like me.

Q: What's your favorite type of game?
A: Axis with mostly African bid. I like the expansionistic game, extending my empire. As Allies, you watch your holdings being plucked away in the early game and are forced more into trying to stop the other's aggressions rather than concentrate on conquest. Also, with the Axis it is faster and easier to plan your moves; and you only have to play 2 powers rather than 3.

As well, I like playing the bad guys!

Q: What is your favorite strategy?
A: Warfare with Camels.
Brutus Backstep.

Q: What changes would you like to see in IAAPA?
A: A better dice-server with built-in logger.

Q: Do you have any hints or suggestions for new players/members?
A: Anyone that can master all of the following, will master the game:

positive kill balances
maximum flexibility
defensive offence
minimal detterant defences
risk/benefit assessment
controlling the game and your opponent's moves

Q: Anything you'd like to add?
A: Even with Mozarts' piano, you can still make noise!

Techs suck!

FOR THE STATS FREAKS:

RECORD AVERAGE WINNING BID*
Total: 39 - 8 In All Wins: 17.9 In All Losses: 18.5
As Allies: 16 - 4 In Allied Wins: 18.3 In Allied Losses: 17.9
As Axis: 23 - 4 In Axis Wins: 17.6 In Axis Losses: 18.2

mheinz

An experienced and expert strategist, mheinz has played A&A since the age of 16, or for the last 12 years depending on whom you ask, and joined IAAPA in April 1996 when it was still known as the Axis and Allies Online Club. A resident of Fulda, Germany, he has made his mark in the IAAPA record books. Winner of at least one IAAPA tournament, he also holds the distinction of being the first non-American and first non-AOL member to reach the officer ranks in IAAPA, and the second member to pin 4 stars on his collar.

Q: Who was/is your most difficult opponent?
A: There are quite a few...mat27, Rewstr, GIJim211, krazyhouse, sirmike25, EnemyThine...

Q: Who's your pick for IAAPA's top player other than yourself? :)
A: The competition is very close among the top players. There are 5 top players I know of, and Rewstr, mat27, and EnemyThine are definitely 3 of them.

Q: What's your favorite type of game?
A: I prefer the Allies - as the game goes on, in the long run, they are more likely to win. 18 IPC for the Axis and me playing the Allies....this is cool. :-)

Q: What is your favorite strategy?
A: I like to keep things equal with the Allies and, over the course of the game, just produce 1 or 2 more infantry each round than my Axis opponents.

Q: What changes would you like to see in IAAPA?
A: In my more active times I had many points I would have liked to change, but since I'm not presently active I can't complain... :-) Okay ~ I really don't like the password protected rankings on the site. Make the openfor the world!!!

Q: Do you have any hints or suggestions for new players/members?
A: Play the top guys, look at what they're doing, a don't get depressed when you lose. Play cool, calm and collected...calculate, calculate, calculate. Think global, but act very locally and detailed. :-) Every inf counts.

Q: Anything you'd like to add?
A: If you ever visit Europe, just stop by. We have some nice old churches and castles here. Unfortunately I am out of service for the time being; but when my life settles down I will definitely return. I hope this happens before I retire...

FOR THE STATS FREAKS:

RECORDAVERAGE WINNING BID*
Total: 42 - 11 In All Wins: 15.5 In All Losses: 16.3
As Allies: 21 - 2 In Allied Wins: 14.3 In Allied Losses: ----
As Axis: 21 - 9 In Axis Wins: 16.6 In Axis Losses: 16.3

*Axis bid info is incomplete and based upon the winning bids in 27 games.

Rewstr

A personal favorite of the Knight, the Rewstr is one of IAAPA's true celebrities. Known for his adept play on either side of the board and possessing the wisdom and skill of one far beyond his 38 years, Rewstr joined IAAPA shortly after the invention of the computer. The champion of at least 3 IAAPA tournaments, his only weakspot seems to be his loyalty to his hometown Cleveland Browns.

Q: How did you get started with A&A?
A: We purchased A&A probably 14 years ago when it was 1st edition rules. It was an excellent game for drinking a couple cold ones on a Sat afternoon and watching College football. No strategy. We loaded up all of our units in Kar and E Eur, had 1 super battle, and the loser had to run to the store for more beer.

Q: Who's your pick for IAAPA's top player other than yourself? :)
A: EnemyThine for 2 reasons.

1) ET was the #1 ranked player when I joined. I had the opportunity to GM a couple of his games. I studied and studied his moves. My game today still has its roots from basic ET strategies.

2) He has the best stories. When playing or GMing a game for ET you never know what type of story ET will deliver. I love a good story.

Q: What's your favorite type of game?
A: I really don't have a favorite. I still receive tremendous satisfaction smashing thru the Allied defenses with my Axis forces or watching the Axis wither as the Allied counterattack gathers momentum.

Q: What is your favorite strategy?
A: The Japanese Lurch. Depending on how turns 1-3 go for the Axis, there often is the opportunity for the Japanese to "lurch" to a Magic 84 during turn 4 or 5. If you see tons of Japanese transports scattered across the Pacific, be careful. The Japanese may be getting ready to gobble up those last couple of territories, taking the Axis to 84.

Q: What changes would you like to see in IAAPA?
A: There should be more involvement at the conventions. Let me tell ya guys; the conventions are awesome. There is nothing like the feeling as I sat down to play Bill Bailey in Las Vegas. He reached into his brown bag, and suddenly a bright blue Romulan Ale appeared. Suddenly, there I was...playing A&A with a fellow I'd never met before, drinking Romulan Ale, and discussing the Federation-Klingon wars. Wow. The next day I found myself across the board from AARommel. I don't know about you, Roger, but it seemed like we needed a play-by-play man for our game. Every 15 minutes someone at the convention stopped over to see how the battle was progressing.

Q: Do you have any hints or suggestions for new players/members?
A: Think about timing.

If I could pick 1 difference between the top 30 players and the folks climbing the ladder, it would be timing. The top 30 have an ability to bring all their forces to bear in a single turn, whether it's on offense and an Axis 1-2 punch on Russia or an Allied 1-2-3 punch on Berlin; or on defense and Japanese fighters are magically within range of Berlin and able to negate a UK/US 1-2 punch on Berlin.

Timing.
You gotta know when to take that 50% Big Battle for Kar.
You gotta know when to roll for Tech.
You gotta know when to buy Armor.
You gotta know timing.

Q: Anything you'd like to add?
A: Nag Nag Nag. Just like my wife. Yikes - here she comes, gotta alt/tab before she sees this ..... :)

FOR THE STATS FREAKS:

RECORDAVERAGE WINNING BID*
Total: 74 - 19 In All Wins: 17.0 In All Losses: 15.7
As Allies: 35 - 4 In Allied Wins: 16.4 In Allied Losses: 14.7
As Axis: 39 - 15 In Axis Wins: 17.5 In Axis Losses: 16.2

*Axis bid info is incomplete and based upon the winning bids in 51 games.

OK. How many of you figured out the significance of the cartoon/condiment/comic/commander prologue right away; and how many of you are still confused? :)

As a sidenote to Rewstr's profile, I'd like everyone to know that the Cleveland Browns are the Knight's 2nd favorite football team. After all, that's 2 easy games every year for the Steelers... :)

Two members of IAAPA, with the real life occupations of police officer and taxicab driver, recently completed an email game. The police officer played the Allies, and the opening Russian move was so utterly devastating to the Axis forces that they had no realistic chance of recovery. The taxicab driver finally conceded after the UK2 turn.

A couple days after winning this game, the police officer was 'running radar' and clocked a guy doing 52 in a 30 MPH zone. As he approached the vehicle he realized that it was a taxicab, and not being very fond of cab drivers, he thought to himself, "Strike One!" When he looked at the cabbie's license he was surprised to see that the speeding cab driver had the same first name as his recent A&A opponent.....and.....in the police officer's own words:

I thought a minute and said to him, "Dude, I need to ask you a personal question. There's something that I just HAVE to know."

He looked at me kind of funny and said, "I guess so. What?"

I asked, "Have you been beaten by a bunch of Russians lately?"

He had this real weird look on his face with his mouth open as I gave him his warning and sped off.

I wonder how long he will ponder that one.

I'd guess that the poor guy is still sitting by the side of the road scratching his head... :)

Here's a great quote....and very appropriate if you've ever seen me play A&A:

I would rather be ashes than dust! I would rather that my spark burn out in a brilliant blaze than it be stifled by dry-rot. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. ~ Jack London, 1916

In other words.....let me go out in a blaze of glory. :)

Squire's Corner

Well, fellow members, the time has come for the free ride to end. The club, as we all have come to know it, is going to undergo a lot of changes. I hope that they will all be for the better. I must give accolades to the few who have been carrying the ball for the rest of us all this time. They know who they are.

The time is now upon us all to promote the club throughout your work places and college campuses. Let's get new blood into this organization and allow this club to grow to new heights.

Knight Muse

What havoc hath he wrought in this great house? ~ Unknown, but I'm researching...

IAAPA stands at a crossroads; we can die, or we can thrive, but all directions lead to change.

I have always advocated participation by the entire membership in determining IAAPA's direction. Many experiences in both the Senate and Legislature, along with numerous discussions over the years, have shown this to be unrealistic, if not impossible. I am hoping that the shift to paid memberships will change this.

Decisions about the club's future currently rest in the hands, and on the shoulders, of a handful of dedicated people. When these leaders make a decision affecting the club they are often castigated for their efforts. Disgruntled members depart in a huff, and the decision makers begin to wonder why they themselves are still around.

I may not always agree with a direction IAAPA has taken, and I may disagree with Todd Vomit's methods at times, but I have nothing but respect and admiration for his energy, dedication, and loyalty to this club. This respect extends to every other member of IAAPA's government as well ~ these are the folks who make it all possible.

As we move into this new era of paid memberships, I hope each and every member will find the time to donate something to the club ~ whether it is as an elected representative, or as a volunteer providing assistance in the operations of the club, or even just as a participant in discussions about the future of IAAPA on the BBS. You've paid to be a member, so please, help us make it the A & A club that everyone wants to join.

Nothing to do?

Ever want to write anything for our new upcoming newsletter .. just let me know or the editor news@spring1942.com (ErwinJERommel)

It'd be an honor :)

~ Game_General

EK ~ Hmmm. Why not? Then I can cause an uproar in TWO clubs. Anyone have any connections at AAMC?

OK, I must tell you my game #7897 with Reytigre.

(Cutting to the chase...)

With GE_2 I gave up.
FYI his bid was as low as 14, but if you can roll this way you can bid with
0.

~ Folgore

PS: I'm rematching now and things are different... :)

EK ~ Sorry to edit your note so drastically Folgore, but Havoc tries not to depress folks. For tales of woe, please send all future contributions to: RedandWhiteDice@TheWhineCellar.sob :)

Being a member now for almost a year, I'm convinced the IAAPA is the best A&A-site there is, enjoying all Tourney-play & reading every Havoc with pleasure. I think the comments during gameplay make up for half of the fun of playing A&A, and I really appreciate the effort you guyz put in to share this fun with everyone. In fact, I'm happy with all the features the IAAPA-site offers, the only thing I'm missing is a good statistical feature, bringing out true figures of Axis-winning and common strategies like IC-placings.
Anyway, keep up the good work and thank you!

Loads of fun & greetings,

~ Dandeman (from the Netherlands)

EK ~ Don't expect the Havoc Dike to start overflowing with stats, Dandeman....I hate that stuff. :) However, I believe you can find what you're looking for on the IAAPA BBS. There's a strategy section there that discusses everything from the hare-brained to the ingenious. At least, that's what I've heard...
