A&A: FROM THE BUNKER 9/15/96 Greetings Cyber Strategists! Here is the next installment of the world famous Axis & Allies Club newsletter. Today we have a lot of exciting news and of course.... stats and commentary. Onward! ** FROM THE CLUTTERED DESK OF THE SGM ** I've been promising and promising that the new club area would be ready any time. Well... now it is fully operational! The Wargaming Forum is now a reality. You will notice that we gained an extra board just for tournament messaging. We have two folders for regular club games and our central folder for information and discussions. No more crowded boards. You should always have room to post. Take advantage of them. Now for something that we have been working on for a long time...... a Keyword! Yes, we not only have a Keyword, we have two Keywords! Our first Keyword is for the new forum. Try Keyword: WARGAMES. You will see our club is now more properly placed among the other wargaming clubs. Please check out these other areas and see what they have to offer. The big news is that our club now has its own Keyword to take you directly to our area. Keyword: A&A. This will not only keep the amount of time it takes to get to our area down to a minimum, but it will bring in new blood for the club. The reason we have been able to get all of the new resources is due to club growth and message board traffic. Let's keep it up! If you are GMing a game, take the time to ensure your game folder is updated. If your game has an internet GM, make sure a folder was created for your game and update it. Drop by the strategy folder and see what the current thoughts are on bidding....... or start up your own folder in the discussions area. Board use and meeting attendence is what gives us power on AOL so I urge all of you to do what you can to help the club. ** Now let us hear from LT Leodar..... ** Hail warmongers! LT Leodar here to preach the gospel of *Field Experience* to the faithful. The AACRS (Axis & Allies Club Ranking System) unanimously passed this amendment. Anyone who has 10 game completions will be advanced from Private to Corporal. An additional 10 games earns promotions up to Master Sergeant. A perusal of our club roster of 200 reveals that 40% of Corporals, Sergeants, and M. Sergeants (22/55) have played more than 10 games. An average speed player involved in an average game length of 7-8 rounds completes one game every two months. Many of you play in multiple games--I salute you! Most of the Field Promotions were awarded to (naturally) AOL A&A club veterans. And speaking of promo's, if your record and GM requirements qualifies you, then please E-mail me with your request (I do not keep track of anyone's GMing). Currently, the following NCO's can advance with enough GMing duties: Marty41070, Sharp100, DWJD, edavid@, umbarg01@, Avis33, bhensely@, JHenderon, mheinz@. Remember that all promotions are earned after gamefinishes are reported. GM's must keep their gamefolders current. Those of you NOT on AOL can still earn promotions and still GM; there will be a 'poster' assigned to your gamefolder. Message Vampire999 if you want to GM--it's cool, it's fun, and it's a great way to learn the tricks of the trade. Reach for the Stars, (Generals' Stars) LT LEODAR ** A word from our new Tournamentalist and number one surfer dude..... ** Greetings Warriors! I thought that I would introduce myself. I am Legonuts, your new Tournamentalist. From now on, though, you can blame me for the tournaments! I am a transplanted California Boy. I grew up in Nebraska (Go HUSKERS!!) I now reside in a small town just outside of San Fransisco. That's NORTHERN California for those of you in the East, So please don't call me "Dude" or any of that other hollywood "surfer" stuff! (just a little cross-state rivalry--not meant to offend anyone). Now down to business: I am always willing to take suggestion, if you think we could improve on the tournaments (be prepared if you make a good suggestion, though--I might ask you to HELP!), and I am always willing to listen to (or read) anything. Please be constructive. I would like to offer a hearty salute to LEODAR, our outgoing tournamentalist, who will continue to compile the AACRS. LEO, you're a good man! (he also wrote most of the next few paragraphs--which saved me a whole lot of time! Thanks again, Leo!) The next tourney is the Fall Classic scheduled October 1st. You must have GM'd 1 game to completion, and finished 2 games by the time of sign-ups. Very shortly, everyone will receive a sign-up notice. All qualifying players are encouraged to participate. You will have 10 days to submit your notice, but the roster will fill on a first-come, first-served basis. Due to the incredible demand (over 80 people in the OPEN), we must adhere to qualifications for the CLASSICS. The OPEN is just that--an OPEN tourney where a newbie could play his first game. Here is the tourney schedule for the next year: 1996 Fall Classic - October 1st, 1996 1996 Invitational - December 1st, 1996 1997 Spring Classic - March 15th, 1997 1997 OPEN Tourney - June 1st, 1997 The Invitational is by 'invitation' only. It will feature the top 16 players in the club for the previous 12 months. The list will be archived in the rankings folder, and invitations will be sent in November. Happy gaming, LEGONUTS A quick note from our New Player Representative....... Club Membership is 206 with 33% coming from the internet. 97 people on the clubs internet waitlist. Presently working 28 new members. How many will make it?????? Beaverhut New Player Rep ** Now for a very scary look into the mind of our clubs' favorite mop-boy, JP. Take it away JP! ** TAILS FROM THE BUCKET (VOL II) in our continuing effort to enlighten our new players though the trials and tribulations of everyday A&A we try to touch upon .........the LOSS.....and how to handle it. now i'm sure most of you began playing for fun and hoping to enjoy some good challanging games. i'm just as sure you've never actually faced up to the possiblity (highly unlikely) of losing. we'll try to take this oft unexpected turn of events and guide you though it. step 1.......realization.......when you start thinking .....if my opponent fails to notice i'm down to 16 ipc for germany and have only 4 inf guarding the fatherland, or ......"i think i can still pull this baby out of the fire! who needs the western US anyway!.....or any similar situation that patton, napoleon and alexander couldn't get out of................YOU'VE LOST step 2 .......careful re-evaution..... you check the board.....check with your opponent on placement....eg: jp to lucky bastard ...i'm not sure do you have 18 armor in Novo or 17? ......or do i still get to spend the ipc's i had in the uk before you took it?.... no eh? i thought not...... step 3 denial........it's hopeless you've studied it out,,,, there's nothing left to do but ....but......but but.....STALL FOR TIME.......i don't have time tonite to compose any mail, that fred astaire movie's on and i've been dying to see it......i'll wait til tomorrow yes that's it i'm a little depressed! tomorrow the board will look rosey...no sense trying to evaluate the position now.......or .....oh .....oh .....ohhhhhhhh! step 4 the excuse.......ok i've lost (lucky bastard) but how? .....i'm a genius right? right! therefore .....something completely abnormal has happened!!!!.....but what? (this is the part crucial to survival of the id, the ego, the rep,) the dice no, well yes of course the dice but more than that, true the dice did favor my opponent, but i took that in account in my moves, skill don't need luck, but damn those dice were out of this world .enough to offset even the plans of a genius! yes the dice those funny little (@#*&$^%#) cubes did me in!!! in spite of all my brilliant plans, whew!!!!!! i'm glad we've logically explained that away.....yes dispite all my cool calculated play sometimes dumb luck wins out ......i am sated.... step 5 rationalization ........i'll win a few and i'll lose a few but the fun is in the playing........(yeah right) my opponent is a worthy adversary and deserved (choke choke choke) to win. ...i'm sure he realizes he was out played and got very very VERY VERY LUCKY TO WIN..... step 6 the message: ya know kipling said if you can lose all you have... to the toss of a dice... and not blink (or some such ) then your a man my son....well that farty old english never played A&A it hurts it hurts oooh it hurts. he never got a cent from disney and they stole everything he ever wrote. ha! not blink? i wish he was around to see his face when the royality checks didn't show up .....not blink ha! but wait back to the subject... defeat yes defeat, but you've got to save face....the time has come to admit (well not really, i could still pull this baby out but it would, could take a really long time, but maybe my opponent will die!?) no no no, (sorry bad form) ....i've lost .....say something like congratulations.... i see no point in continuing to play (i've better things to do) and hereby submit my surrender (you lucky bastard) thanks for the lesson (in dumb luck) hope to play you again (and wipe you and your entire family and the horse they followed to town off the face of the earth!) real SOON. step 7 thanks gm ...,(that.... ), (no good, probably related to the other guy....dice roll'in !) ....say something nice like... dear gm your fast pace (always with bad news) and clear results (moronic) made the play of this game (for you brother) easy (moron) and enjoyable (die die die) (sorry) well that sums it up for this turn around the bucket....ole jp has lost a few hisself and hopes his experienced wisdom can in someway help those players who face this difficult situation to carry on. (though i expected never to lose.....nope not once.....yep... jp the genius right? right! ...but those damn dice hit after hit after hit, ya know aaguns can miss! ya jerk. jp the legend....yep undefeated in over 200 hundred games... there he goes .....to hushed crowds...giving exhibitions .....playing 10 games at once in ...crowded auditoriums... chicks galore!.....BUT NO!!! the gm's said this is not to be! i could been SOMEBODY.... but you rolled four six's in a ROW !!! in a row! whoops sorry fade to black........) the long winded mop boy ** Last but not least...... the STAT's.
