*** FROM THE BUNKER 10/14/96 *** Greetings Cyber Strategists! Yes, what you have all been eagerly anticipating... the next installment of 'From The Bunker', the official Club newsletter. Get your weapons ready, count your rounds, and keep your heads down 'cause here it comes! ~From The Cluttered Desk of the SGM~ Ever notice how woefully outdated our club rules are? Well we did and the final update will be going before the Appeals Court for a vote this week. A copy of the updated rules will be sent to all club members and placed in the Club library for download. In other news, the club is having its first General vs General battle to see who gets a second star and the top position in the club. Game #1102 is General EnemyThine vs General CPNeifert. CP was itching for revenge when ET returned from brief retirement. CP would have had an automatic promotion if ET had remained off-line. CP vowed he would punish ET for foiling his promotion. However, the game started poorly for CP as the Allies. In fact, so poorly that CP offered a draw to ET after USSR1. This only caused ET to mockingly laugh. It is also rumored that Enemy achieved Japanese Heavy Bombers with only 5 IPC's investment. Sheesh! Sounds like some of my games against EnemyThine. Good Luck Gentlemen! ** From our esteemed DSGM, Vampire999..... ** ************************ Message to all GM's ************************ When the game you are GM'ing is over, the game finish notice needs to go to Legonuts@aol.com,STATKMAN@aol.com, and Vampire999@aol.com *********************** Player Pool *********************** The player pool is now organized by player speed. Thanks Dave! ** How's it going? I am currently fulfilling Beaverhut's massive responsiblities in his New Player Representitive role. While he is away for a month, I am taking over all of his duties, which include the Final Hurdle Questions, how the game is played, and any other beginner questions anyone may have. ** Thanks Chris B. and Dave. Good job! Now let's hear from our Conference Czar! ** ============================================================= Greetings Warriors!!! Tis' I Hocy with an update concerning our conferences. We will start having conferences on different days, instead of the old Thursday night only. This will allow us to accomodate more users, as many of us may not be able to make any conferences if they were only on one day of the week. The most likely days will be Wednesday night, Thursday night, and also the week-ender on Saturday afternoons. This new schedule is taking effect after the conference on the 9th of Oct. Current standard conference times are: Wed and Thurs at 9pm EST, and Sat at 2pm EST. Conferences from now on, will be held in the Wargaming conference room, just use Keyword and enter Wargaming at the prompt, and you are there!!! We will be discussing a variety of topics, centering on Axis and Allies strategy. As always, i encourage YOU to write me and tell me what topics you would like to see. Well, i am off to make a huge glove save, so i must run. See you at the next conference!!!! -Hocy (Jeff) AOL A&A Appeals Court/Conference Czar ** That's right folks, we are now using our own Wargaming conference room. Let's all make it a point to attend these conferences. We get a lot of good information out and see some real spirited discussions. It is a lot of fun, and a great place to find a new opponent. Make them prove those stupid strategies! After-conference drinks will be served in Private Room: AABG (Axis & Allies Bar and Grill). Stop on by when the walls of the Terms of Service are cast down. Now a word from our Rules Lawyer, Lord Pez. Take it away PEZ! ** ---===Pez Sez===--- Many of you may have noticed that over the months I have been fiddling with the default sub withdrawal rule and may have wondered why I just can't leave it alone. Well the reason for all this fiddling is rather simple but the solution has proven rather elusive. REASON: All along I have had a 1 message per turn goal. 1 message from the attacking player. 1 message from the GM. 1 message from the next attacking player. 1 message from the GM...........Game conclusion. Also, all along, I have hoped to stay as true as possible to face to face play. (We're such purists here at AOL A&A.) Defending sub withdrawals throw a real wrench in such goals. The problem is they require input from another player (the defender) and can invalidate attacker non-combat and unit placement orders; thus frying the 1 message per turn goal. In addition, dumping the defending sub withdrawal option deviates far from face to face play; so much for being a purist. Accordingly, I have been searching for a way to navigate between the horns of this dilemma. (Now you know the reason for all that tweaking.) SOLUTION: Now for the good news. Continued fiddling and input from both CptRickJ and Vagrunt has yielded tasty fruit. Pay careful attention to the difference between giving withdrawal orders and using the default option (what happens when you don't do anything special). Giving withdrawal orders allows subs to function precisely like they do in Face to Face play. Utilizing the default option still allows subs to withdraw but only in very limited circumstances. ***SUB WITHDRAWALS*** Both attacking and defending subs may withdraw from naval combat as per face to face play. To accommodate e-mail play, however, some minor modifications and clarifications must be made. 1) Attacking subs may withdraw according to Milton Bradley rules provided withdrawal orders are sent with the attack. 2) Defending subs may withdraw according to Milton Bradley rules provided their withdrawal orders were sent *prior* to the attacker's orders: A) The sub owner sends in a special sub withdrawal order stating under what circumstances the sub should withdraw and where it should withdraw to. Note that withdrawal orders are not limited to air-only-vs-sub-only situations. B) Defending sub withdrawal orders should be sent with your regular turn but are in effect for your upcoming opponents turn (that's when your sub will be defending). C) Defending sub withdrawal orders may be "secret" (sent only to your GM). D) Successful defending sub withdrawal orders invalidate attacker non-combat movement into or through the SZ your sub withdrew to and (when appropriate) also invalidate naval unit placement. E) Units whose non-combat movement is invalidated by successful withdrawal orders do not move at all. Purchased units unable to be placed due to successful withdrawal orders are lost. Accordingly, attackers are encouraged to use conditional "if/then" orders to anticipate the results of defender sub withdrawals. **Always assume your opponent has sent withdrawal orders!** 3) No withdrawal order default rule: If no special instructions are given subs will act in the following manner: A) Subs (attacking and defending) do not withdraw unless they face air-only- VS-sub-only combat. B) After the first round of combat, subs facing air-only-VS-sub-only combat withdraw to any friendly or empty adjacent SZ available at the end of the attackers turn; the location being sent prior to the following turn. C) For *default* rule purposes, SZs with enemy units, SZs with any combat, or SZs with any enemy naval non-combat into, through, or out of are *not* considered friendly or empty. D) If no empty or friendly SZ is available due to combat, non-combat or unit placement then the withdrawing sub is destroyed. Example: COMBAT: Hawaii SZ (1 US SUB) attacked by 1 Japanese ftr from Wake Island, land Wake Island. NON COMBAT: BB Jpn SZ - Solomon Island SZ Round 1: Japanese Fighter rolls (4): a miss. GM withdraws sub, asks the US player to submit the location of the sub's retreat prior to the following turn, and informs the US player that it cannot retreat to the Solomon Island SZ since the Japanese BB moved there during non- combat. Another example: In the Hawaii example above, if the defending sub player had sent in a sub withdrawal order with their UK turn ordering the sub to withdraw to the Solomon Island SZ then the US sub would withdraw to that SZ and the non-combat BB order would be invalid -- hopefully the Japanese player used an if/then non-combat order to accommodate such a possibility. As always, send your rules questions, comments and concerns my way.
