IAAPA Battlefield Review #1 - January 2001

Salutations IAAPA members,

Welcome to the first edition of the IAAPA Battlefield Review showcasing our great tournament events. Here you will find tourney news, views, stats and more.

It took me a little while to come up with a name for our tournament newsletter. After considering a few names I was keen on Fields of Glory but then there was the concern that Association members might mistake it as spam advertising for that really crap Napoleonic War game from a few years back and just delete it. I finally came up with the current title but as this is a newsletter for everyone I welcome any feedback or suggestions in regard to the name (and contents) of this publication.

One guy is really taking my request for gamestart numbers to heart. When I sent this inquiry to AxisSpec asking if he had his game number yet he replied........

" Not yet, but I've been sitting in front of my monitor ever since I submitted the challenge 40 hours ago so that I will be able to forward the game number mere seconds after it's arrival. "

Now thats the kind of dedication I like to see!

Attention: KBell, who just so happens to be JBell49's brother, is a late entrant in this event and has been paired with Tusk in rd1

Rd1 # 8214: Col Hogan (allies) def Polaris

One moment while I slip on my grey trenchcoat and put in my monicle....Hoguuuunnn!!! you've done it again!.

In their own words: Col.Hogan

" The Axis were still looking OK, but Ger 3 left Kar underdefended, UK attacked and took out most of the defenders, US would have been able to easily mop up the survivors.

Allies were doing good everywhere else (as would be expected with an all European bid). With the threat from Karelia gone, Rus would have been able to hold back the Japanese in Asia, US & UK would keep pumping troops into Europe. Axis wouldn't have lasted too long, so Polaris surrendered. "

# 8207 JBell (axis) def HighCmmdr

NEWSFLASH.....TOP GUN OUT!!! As I predicted HC was going to find a dangerous opponent in JBell.

In their own words: JBell

" Russia started out with a rough Baltic battle, losing a FTR. It took several turns for UK to get involved, and had major problems in Africa. Japan expanded very quickly in the North, and built two ICs in the first couple turns. Germany took Cau. and the Axis took enough of Africa and almost all of Asia, threatening "Magic 84". US got long range air but strong defense in Eve kept US from preventing "Magic 84" at the end of turn IV. "

# 8199 ToddVomit (axis) def HoganS

Another of my tough game predictions. However this one fizzled out a little after a pyrotechnic beginning.

In their own words: ToddVomit

"An Extremely Violent Russian Front Early, and when the dust settled, it was germany in Moscow."

_______________ Ancient History _______________

In this first edition I take you back to the 1996 Fall Classic and examine some of its statistics, later I will compare them with the current 2000 Fall Classic stats.

32 player 5 rnd tournament.

Winning sides (Axis v Allied)
rd1 allies 7 games Axis 8 games null 1
rd2 allies 2 Axis 4 null 1
rd3 allies 2 Axis 1 null 1
rd4 allies 1 Axis 1 null -
rd5 allies 1 Axis 0 null -
tot allies 13 Axis 14 null 3

This first table shows that back in 1996 players were equally adept at playing as the Axis than they were as the Allies. OR perhaps the Allied strategists had some difficulty countering the Axis bids?

_______________ Trivial Pursuit _______________

I don't know if this is a regular occurance but did you know that our UK member, Norman Oliver has to my knowledge played several tournament rounds as a best of three. If Norman plays these "mini tourneys" each round then potentially he could play upward of eighteen games if he proceeds to win the Classic. Now that is taking the reeeally long road to victory.

What amazes me most is that he completes his rds as fast as anyone who plays just the one game.

--------------------------------------------------

While this isn't connected to A&A in any way other than that the IAAPA has its very own Col Hogan, did you know that two of the cast members of Hogans Heroes, Robert Clary (LeBeau) and John Banner (Sgt Shultz) were interned in Nazi Concentration camps and Werner Klemperer (Col. Klink) although born in Germany served in the US army from 1942 - 45.

_______________ PRE - DWARF TOURNEYS _______________

The Millennium tournament is moving along again and the Final hopefully will start sometime before the next Millennium.

The 1998 Fall Open Championship Final is now under way. The two combatants being AARommel (who is as merciless as a Spanish Conquistador) and kpfleger (who is no Aztec virgin...well he's no Aztec anyway) so it should be a great struggle. Good luck to both players.

So ends the first edition of the IAAPA Battlefield Review if there is any comments, stats or other info that you want to contribute then send them my way using my tourney address: tourneys@axisandallies.net

Coming up in the next issue.....More news, stats, player comments and a little bit more.
