The Commander's Tactical Tip!!

Greetings,

At the request of the new Havoceur I am submitting what I hope to be a tactical tip useful to the majority of our club members. If we receive any positive feedback then we will keep this as part of the Havoc. Also if any one would like to submit their own tip please do so to me at

strategy@axisandallies.net

Credit will be given and of course I hope to use the information as well in our soon to be revised club strategy and tactics pages.

"Mustangs in the Med"

SITUATION: Germany has opted to keep the pesky Med fleet alive and the few German units comprising of the Afrika Korps are becoming quite troublesome since they can still be resupplied. Allied fighters can't reach the fleet and as the Allies your loath to sacrifice a bomber on the transport/battleship combination. Also it is possible that Germany has a sub or another transport added to make the fleet more formidible. (Note: Fighters based in Cau would reach most of the Med but for some bids this is not always the case. If Cau is being traded or compromised as a dead zone then this tactic would work best).

As Allies let's say UK 1 saw the purchase of a transport and an aircraft carrier followed by the landing of two US fighters on the UK aircraft carrier on the US 1 turn. This would be the ideal situation.

SET UP: Most games will see that the US has to prep on US 1 for an amphibious assault on US 2. The US 3 turn is usually a non factor as troops bought in US 2 make their way from the Wus to Wca. The US tranports sit idle. At this point the Allied player would want to have both US fighter wings on the UK aircraft carrier.

The US bomber, probably in Russia needs to be positioned so as to avoid any Axis AA guns lying around the area say in Cau or thereabouts. Possible staging points will be Rus, Per, Ken, Iea or Con.

EXECUTION: Assuming the fleet is in the Emed sz and probably desperately trying to take Syria and Egypt for an Indian Ocean escape route the tactic would be exectuted as follows:

UK 3: The brits amphib Algeria moving the fleet to the WSpa sz including the aircraft carrier with the US fighters on board. This in effect now brings the US fighter wings within striking distance of the German Med Navy.

US 3: US fighters plus the US bomber then attack the German Med Navy. Most likely battle would be Allies: 2 fighters/1 bomber vs Axis: 1 transport/1 battleship. Allied success rate would be about 92%. Allies 2 fighters/1 bomber vs Axis: 2 transports/ 1 battleship would be about 68%

VARIATIONS: The Allies do not necessarily have to kill the entire fleet. If the Suez is not open then after killing the tranport(s) the Allies can retreat daring the Axis player to invest hard earned IPC's in more transports in the Cmed sz.

Another option is to wait a turn and send an expendable US transport into the area as well for fodder. This is usually not feasible however as time is critical and other things are happening on other fronts but this option can come up.

IF the German Med Navy is in the Emed sz and both Syria and Egypt are Axis controlled or dead zone compromised then the US fighters would still be out of range. At this point during the execution phase the Allies would amphib Alg via the Wmed sz. The following turn the UK tranports could still transport ground units to Finland. Then the German Med Navy would be within US fighter range.

CONTINGENCY: No good player would be without contingency or recovery plans. This happens when that dastardly die roller decides its time to balance the law of large numbers or when it decides to do some statistical anomoly.

If the battle goes awry or even if it goes as planned the Allies won't want to risk the shiny new UK aircraft carrier along with some precious transports. Therefore a third US fighter if available should be within either landing range of the UK ac (in the Wsp sz or Wmed sz) OR within range of Karelia if not already there (so that a Russian fighter could take it's place on the UK ac). If the US fighter is not available then don't overlook the possibility of landing a Russian fighter or two on the UK aircraft carrier for a turn. Once the UK moves the fleet back to home waters the Russian fighters can participate in the trading of the Ukraine and still land
in Karelia for defence duty once again.

Finally adding any remaining Russian Naval units to the fleet will help deter an attack or if in the Wsp sz a surviving Russian unit such as the sub can be
sent to blockade the German fleet (say if it is in Cmed sz and UK fleet is in the Wsp sz) by going to the Wmed sz.

DISCLAIMER: Of course the amount of variables grow exponentially which is what makes the game so exciting. This tactic shouldn't be used simply for the sake of using it but rather for a time when the Allies absolutely, positively must have the German fleet destroyed say to prevent the possibility of a Magic 84 by the Afrika Korps or some other special strategic
purpose.

Each player should have several dozen tactics in his repoirtare of knowledge each specifically designed for a special purpose.

The Commander takes no liability for any disasters produced by the die roller or from any use of the tactic which ignores fundamental basics such as protecting Moscow or when using such tactics against superior players ;)

Hope you enjoyed your tip of the month. My last request for feedback
resulted in zero responses so let's try to do better than that if you think
this is a worthwhile endeavour.

Thanks

CLINTON'S CHOICE .....

One day in the future, Bill Clinton has a heart attack and dies. He
immediately goes to h*ll, where the devil is waiting for him.

"I don't know what to do here," says the devil. "You are on my list,
but I have no room for you. You definitely have to stay here, so I'll
tell you what I'm going to do. I've got a couple folks here who weren't
quite as bad as you. I'll let one of them go, but you have to take their
place. I'll even let you decide who leaves."

Smitty's Stumper

Which country first declared war on Germany after the Nazi's invaded Poland??

(answer next issue)

Clinton thought that sounded pretty good, so the devil opened the
first room. In it was Ted Kennedy and a large pool of water. He kept
diving in and surfacing empty handed. Over and over and over.
Such was his fate in h*ll.

"No," Bill said. "I don't think so. I'm not a good swimmer and I
don't think I could do that all day long."

The devil led him to the next room. In it was Newt Gingrich with a
sledge hammer and a room full of rocks. All he did was swing that
hammer, time after time after time.

"No, I've got this problem with my shoulder. I would be in constant
agony if all I could do was break rocks all day," commented Bill.

The devil opened a third door. In it, Clinton saw Kenneth Starr,
lying on the floor with his arms staked over his head, and his legs
staked in a spread eagle pose. Bent over him was Monica Lewinsky,
doing what she does best.

Clinton took this in, in disbelief, and finally said, "Yea, I can
handle this."

The devil smiled and said "OK, Monica, you're free to go."
