Grizzled Ol' Greybeards

Warmonger

Games played: 93

Wins: 41

Losses: 52

My name is Doug Mills and I live in South Portland, ME. I'm a carpenter and I work for myself. I enjoy playing golf and pool besides a+a. I'm married with no kids, but we do have a dog.

I first stated playing a+a about 20 years ago, back when you could build unlimited numbers of units on new ic's. Boy the Allies were tough to beat then!

I like how each game plays out differently depending on the bid and the first round dice.

I don't care for amphibious assaults or techs because they always seem to go against me.

GK: do you prefer axis or allies?? why?

I like the Axis because of the challenge, I think the Allies have a distinct advantage if they can avoid an early victory.

I like a bid of 5 inf in Eeu and 1 inf in Man along with an ipc for the Germans. I think that this gives the Germans the extra units they need to take Karelia or at least hold the Allies off long enough for the Japs to get involved. It also deters the Russians from trying to take Manchuria on turn 1.

GK: whats the craziest bid you ever faced? Did you win?

Hmm, I've seen some pretty strange bids before and usually beat them soundly but I once faced a bid of an ac for Germany in the CMed and lost. I thought it would be an easy win for the Allies but ended up losing due to magic 84.

GK: whos your favorite opp?? why?

It's a toss up between Wehrmachter and AxisSpec. They both play strong games and are quick with their replies. While I have played other high-ranking members who meet this criteria, at least these guys let me win once in a while! (It's never too late to join these two in my favorite opponents group Phil, you should give it some thought)

GK: hmm tempting offer... What's your sweetest victory? Tell us about it..

Game #8171 v. DeBruce. This game was a re-match for The Giant Killer after losing with the Allies in an earlier game due to magic 84. This time the Allies were pretty much having their way with the Germans and things were starting to look bleak for the Axis. After UK 10, I got the following from him...

The sooner you surrender the sooner we can start the rubber match.

...thus assuring me that it was over for the Axis. To this I replied...

What are we talking here, best three out of five? After I get done running through Russia the Allies will be ready for a surrender of their own! Japs out next...

...I then proceeded to smash the Russians and parked 11 armored divisions in Moscow! The Allies took Germany on US 16 but surrendered after the Japs marched into Eastern Europe with 36 infantry and 49 armor on their next turn. I enjoyed both games with DeBruce and will play him again soon.

I only had a 31% chance of winning at all, never mind taking with double digits! It was all the better because he was so sure he had won.

GK: Any strategic wisdom for the masses?

Always try to play at least half of your games against higher ranking players. It may not do much for your wins/losses record but you'll get to see some masterful performances!

GK: what do you like most about the IAAPA (aside from the games).

I like this club over the other because of the higher level of play and the integrity of the ranking system.

GK: if you could change anything about the club what would you do?

I would change the server so that it would automatically load the info from one page to the next (ground combat to naval as an example)

GK: anything you wish to add??

Thank you to Todd and the rest of the powers that be for keeping this site up and running, it provides me with a welcome distraction from the everyday problems of life.

Govt. Who's Who:

Chancellor of the Exchequer and Assmbly Coordinator: Tim

I was born in East Liver Pool Ohio, but moved to Florida when i was three and have been living here and loving it ever since. I am currently attending college, I am working on getting my masters in Business Adm. and Management with a minor in political science. I work for Bank of America full time as a personal Banker, I handle opening accounts, servicing accounts, opening loans etc... I am currently the youngest personal banker in the state of Florida I am told and may well be the youngest in the company. I am only 19:) I have been playing axis and allies since i was 9 and have only recently been playing in Ihe IAAPA. I am heavy into politics (yes a sign of someone with no life) and also hold the honor of being the only student in my High School district to ever be elected president of two High schools. (Like i said i have no life:)

I am in charge of two offices:Chancellor of Exchequer and Assembly Coordinator. I wanted to join the government because my back ground in banking helps a lot with auditing the government's funds. I am currently getting a program from my job that will allow me or any government offical to download the numbers into their computer and have an auto audit. This should help with any accounting errors on anyone's part and it means that when i get replaced that the person taking over my position will have a easy time. This position really hasn't been spelled out so it is kinda as i see fit. Once I get the software program up and running on my computer i intended to have it posted for everyone to see.

The Assembly Coordinator position is actually my favorite. What got me into this position was the message boards. One thing i like about our club is the message boards because a lot of people go on and state their opinions. I noticed one day going to the boards that we use to have seminars on different subjects and I really like this idea. I also notice that our club hasn't had one since last year so I asked about it and the next thing i knew people voted and I won (Well, it was either me or vacant, and i did have one advantage over vacant:I can breath and type.) I intend to have a seminar once a week if I can but if we can't get enough of the membership to show up then bi-weekly. I see myself as a facilitator in the discussions, i don't claim to be an all knowing all seeing general, just someone who enjoys sharing information and learning information from others. I would like to have a government offical or a general also be their as the guest speaker so that they can share their opinions as well.

I joined the club because I love the game axis and allies. Every game is different, and everyone comes into a game thinking I will do this and that and i will win and then the dice roller (or dice gods) will throw a lighting bolt down and you are left sitting thinking "why me? Didn't you like the lamb? do you want a goat instead?"

My impressions so far have been very postive. I see our one big issue as getting more members and getting more people involved. This can only be done if the government acts as a team and does actions that gets club members involved and I think so far given the limited number of people on hand to help that we are doing a great job. I see my job as a chance to help maintain our ranks and improve the over all morale with in the club so I look forward to this challenge.

Send me emails about topics you want talked about and what time is good for you. You can reach me here:
